Celebrating the Journey and Impact of the Climate Action Champions Network

The Climate Action Champions Network, spearheaded by the Sri Lanka Development Journalists Forum (SDJF) with invaluable support from the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, has successfully concluded after over two years of impactful operation. During this time, we have facilitated and imparted knowledge to 20 exceptional young Sri Lankan climate leaders, of which 17 remain active. These dedicated individuals, united by their passion for climate action, represent a diverse cohort that includes scientists, entrepreneurs, academics, undergraduates, advocates, researchers, and doctors.

Exploring Sri Lanka's Climate Hotspots

Our journey took us across five key climate hotspots in Sri Lanka, each offering unique insights and learning opportunities:

  1. Colombo - Western Province

  2. Deniyaya - Southern Province

  3. Potuvil - South Eastern Province

  4. Kandy - Central Province

  5. Jaffna - Northern Province

In each of these hotspots, our climate champions engaged in experiential learning, diving deep into the distinct climate challenges and opportunities presented by these regions. This hands-on exploration not only broadened their understanding of climate issues but also fostered stronger bonds and collaboration among the participants.

Empowering Future Leaders

Through this program, our cohorts embarked on a transformative learning journey, gaining invaluable firsthand knowledge and experience. They actively explored and studied climate hotspots, enhancing their expertise and equipping themselves to drive impactful climate action. The experiences and insights gained from these explorations have been instrumental in their development as climate leaders.

Expanding Horizons Across South Asia

In addition to their local explorations, our cohort members traveled to South Asian countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. They participated in the Climate Action Champions Network (CACN) conferences, where they exchanged knowledge, ideas, and best practices with their peers from the region. These international experiences enriched their perspectives and strengthened their commitment to addressing climate change on a broader scale.

Continuing the Journey

While the formal program may have concluded, the journey for our climate champions does not end here. Equipped with the knowledge and skills acquired over the past two years, they are now poised to innovate, collaborate, and raise awareness about climate change within their areas of expertise. Their commitment to driving climate action remains unwavering, and we believe they will continue to make significant contributions to their communities, the people, and the planet.

Witnessing Growth and Collaboration

Throughout this program, we have had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable growth of these young leaders. Their dedication, passion, and collaborative spirit have been truly inspiring. They have not only deepened their climate expertise but have also built lasting relationships and partnerships that will continue to support their efforts in the future.

Acknowledging Our Partners

This program was implemented by the Sri Lanka Development Journalists Forum (SDJF) in cooperation with the US Embassy in Colombo and other South Asian partners such as The GenLab organization, Observer Research Foundation - India, Institute of Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR) - Nepal, and Nepal US Alumni Network (NUSAN). We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these partners for their invaluable support and collaboration.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate the conclusion of the Climate Action Champions Network, we are confident that the program's most valuable learnings will continue to resonate with our champions. They are now equipped to advocate for and take action on behalf of their communities and the environment. The past two years have been an unforgettable learning experience, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of our climate champions as they carry forward the torch of climate action.
